COMMITMENT

Cultural competency in the classroom: Individuals should
be able to relate to students with diverse
backgrounds.

EDUCATION

Diversity: There should be more diversity. The current teacher population is predominantly White.

EXPERIENCE

There are disadvantages to being poor.  The members of COEBE believe that the education of children is vital to the success of our democracy.

OUR FOCUS

Race relations: The disease of racism has contributed to the marginal under-representation and neglect of students.

A Rationale For The Work

It is no secret that the educational civil rights of Black students have traditionally and consistently been violated. Data shows that Black students continue to lag behind their white counterparts on the academic performance outcomes on standardized tests. Lower scores on assessments can often impact college acceptances as well as efficacy in higher education settings. On average, Black students typically score one standard deviation below white students on standardized tests which is roughly the difference in performance between the average fourth grader and the average eighth grade (Educationnext.org 2006).
