ABOUT US & WHAT WE DO

As the Coalition of Experienced Black Educators, members of COEBE boast a combined service in public education (Springfield Public Schools - SPS), Pre-K -12, as well as higher education, of more than one hundred years. These years of service include various educational leadership positions. Our mission is to identify and address the educational failings and academic struggles of all children particularly African American children by using our voices as experienced educators, parents of African American children, and community leaders. It is no secret that the educational civil rights of black students have traditionally and consistently been violated. Data shows that black students continue to lag behind their white counterparts on the academic performance outcomes on standardized tests. Lower scores on assessments can often impact college acceptance as well as efficacy in higher education settings.  The state of the average black academic achievement, from K through graduate schools, is extremely discouragingly far behind that of Asian Americans and whites and substantially behind that of Latinos. Even worse, Black academic achievement in K-12 schools has not improved noticeably relative to that of Caucasians or Asian Americans in about thirty years and has, in some ways, deteriorated despite the growth of the  Black middle class. There is little reason to believe this will change in the foreseeable future (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/elections/2018/). We address these disparities according to our mission.
